Can I Get Pregnant If I Have PCOS?

If you’re struggling with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), you’re probably wondering if you can still have a baby. The short answer is: yes, you can get pregnant. But your journey may be less straightforward than you planned.
Jennifer Wright-Bennion, CNM, APRN, our certified nurse-midwife and advanced nurse practitioner here at Luxe Women’s Health in Queen Creek, Arizona, specializes in PCOS care and fertility, and she’s helped hundreds of women with PCOS start and grow their families. If you're beginning to think about getting pregnant soon or have been trying for a long while, here’s what Jennifer wants you to know.
Understanding PCOS and fertility
Unfortunately, PCOS is one of the most common causes of infertility, but thankfully, it’s also one of the most treatable. When you have PCOS, your body often produces more male hormones (androgens) that interfere with ovulation. If you’re not ovulating, no egg is released, and without an egg, pregnancy is impossible.
Common PCOS symptoms that can impede fertility include:
- Irregular periods
- Acne
- Unwanted hair growth
- Male-pattern baldness
- Ovarian cysts
Another telltale sign of PCOS is weight gain or difficulty losing weight. We can help with our custom weight loss plans.
Improving fertility when you have PCOS
We use several strategies in our practice to help restore your ovulation and increase your chances of conceiving. Depending on your specific symptoms, we may recommend:
- Lifestyle changes: A healthy diet and regular exercise can regulate hormones and restore ovulation in many women; losing just 5-10% of your body weight can boost fertility
- Ovulation tracking: Understand your cycle using ultrasound monitoring and hormone testing
- Medications: Medications can help stimulate ovulation
- Hormonal Contraception: Improve your hormone balance and insulin sensitivity to improve the possibility of conceiving
Jennifer may recommend in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI) to help you conceive.
When to seek help
If you’re under age 35 and you’ve been trying to get pregnant for 6 months (or longer), we recommend scheduling a consultation. The sooner you and your partner get evaluated, the more it can make a difference in your fertility journey, especially with PCOS, where early intervention frequently leads to better outcomes.
At Luxe Women’s Health, we offer:
- Comprehensive PCOS assessments
- Hormone testing
- Customized fertility treatment plans
- Supportive whole-body care, not just for your reproductive system
