Pellet Delivery for Bioidentical Hormone Therapy: All Your Questions Answered

If you’ve been exploring options for bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, you may have come across something called pellet therapy. At Luxe Women’s Health in Queen Creek, Arizona, our certified nurse-midwife and advanced nurse practitioner, Jennifer Wright-Bennion, CNM, APRN, often gets questions about this increasingly popular method. Let’s look into what pellet delivery is, how it works, and why it might be the right fit for you.
What is pellet therapy?
Pellet therapy is a method of delivering hormones that are chemically identical to those your body naturally produces, called bioidentical hormones. Jennifer inserts the tiny pellets, about the size of a grain of rice, just under your skin, typically in your hip area.
Once she places the pellets under your skin, they release a steady dose of estrogen and testosterone into your bloodstream over several months. You won’t have to remember to take pills, attach patches, or apply creams because your pellet will be quietly working behind the scenes.
What issues respond to pellet therapy?
Many women turn to hormone therapy to ease bothersome symptoms caused by perimenopause, menopause, and hormone imbalances. Some common concerns we treat with pellet therapy include:
- Hot flashes
- Night sweats
- Mood swings
- Trouble focusing
- Low energy
- Difficulty sleeping
- Vaginal dryness
- Low libido
These telltale symptoms can wreck your productivity and relationships. Pellet therapy can restore hormonal balance and improve your quality of life.
What can I expect during the pellet therapy process?
Jennifer starts by talking with you about your symptoms and health history. She calls for a full panel of lab work to check your hormone levels. From there, she customizes your treatment based on your unique goals and needs.
Once she determines the right hormone and precise dosage, she:
- Numbs your target area (typically your hip) with a local anesthetic
- Inserts the pellets in an ultra-quick in-office procedure (you should be in and out in less than 15 minutes)
- Covers the area with a small bandage that you can remove after a day or two
Typically, you’ll start feeling results within a couple of weeks, with optimal benefits showing up around 4-6 weeks after the procedure. Pellets are effective for about 3-4 months.
Is pellet therapy right for me?
Bioidentical hormones are generally well tolerated and safely used for many years. Because they mimic your body’s natural hormones, synthetic alternatives tend to have fewer side effects. Even so, we always monitor your progress closely and adjust along the way as needed.
Pellet therapy might be a good choice if you prefer an option you don’t have to think about, want consistent, long-term hormone support, and haven’t found success with other hormone delivery methods.
If you’ve been on a hormonal roller coaster, talk to Jennifer about how bioidentical pellet therapy can make you feel yourself again. Call now to schedule an in-person or telehealth visit, or book your appointment online.
